Solo MTG: My FIRST Commander Deck is Complete! 🧝
Lathril is an AMAZING Commander, and I see why she's a popular pick!
I just officially played Commander for the first time the other day against one of my challenge decks, DEFEAT A GOD (Xenagos Ascended). I have been learning so much about this build and I think I'm starting to understand her abilities a lot better now!
You can see my full playthrough on YouTube here. But, a few things that I have learned (shoutout to the MTG community on YT for helping me out :D) are listed below:
1. I have been using Lathril wrong! So, when she deals damage to a player, she creates that SAME AMOUNT of 1/1 Elf creature tokens. Imagine combining that with Beastmaster Ascension... she has the opportunity to create 7 of those 1/1 Elf creature tokens!!! Honestly, at the end of the playthrough I probably would have ended up with 9 Elf creature tokens and I could've CRUSHED Xenagos and his nasty little Revelers. 👹 Then, if I had a total of 10 elves on the field, I could have activated her other ability where I can tap her and my 10 elves to make my opponent lose 10 health and I gain 10.
Wow, the creativity behind the strategy of this deck is flowing! I am so excited to play this deck again, maybe against my Minotaur challenge deck. I feel like that would be a really fun challenge!
2. I have been using Hidden Grotto wrong! Someone on YT took the time to explain to me how to use this land correctly. This is actually considered a "filter land," meaning it can provide 1 colorless mana AFTER you tap 1 mana from another source. This is definitely a good land I can take advantage of when I just need an extra black mana to cast my Commander. I'm still trying to learn how many lands I should really have in total because I think I may have too many green mana, but having this "filter land" is perfect for when I need a black one!
A general habit I am noticing for myself is how "attached" I get to certain creatures on the field. I need to remember that I have a BUNCH of other elves in my deck that I can cast too, so I shouldn't feel hesitant to allow certain creatures to block some damage. I'm really enjoying all the things I am learning behind Lathril's style of combat, it's exciting!
Just finished my 2025 MTG-related goal, and that is to complete my FIRST Commander deck. <3
