Intro to Solo TTRPGs (5/5): Tips on Balancing Being Both a DM & a Player

Image
Finding the right type of flow is so important to enjoying your solo session. Here are some tips that have personally helped me find that right balance! 1. USE LOGIC. You are the DM. If it makes sense, then it makes sense. Get that self-critic out of your head and do what makes the most sense to you. Don't ever think that your idea is dumb or stupid. If an idea come up, then let that idea come to life! 2. Don't get super hung up on all the details of a location. You don't need to roll on the tables of "every" single detail. If your character is in the middle of a forest, then obviously... there will be a tree. No need to ask the Fate Chart, "Is there a tree I can hide behind?" Well, duh. 3. Learn to ask the right type of Yes/No (or "Likely/Unlikely") questions. For example, you can ask something like, "Is there a window that's a bit cracked open that I could sneak through?" If it's a "Yes," perform a skill check to s...

Intro to Solo TTRPGs (4/5): How to Actually Play Solo

Image
Now comes the part a lot of people struggle with understanding... this is how you play! Be patient with yourself in this step! It will take a couple of tries to mentally understand how to make playing flow more naturally. If it doesn't "click" for you, that's totally ok and that just means you have to make some tweaks! I will be using an example to go through the play.  My character is Rovik, a half-orc male barbarian (30 years old). He's quite tall, burly and carries a large axe with him wherever he goes. He has long black hair, but usually has it up in a bun whenever he's working at the local blacksmith or challenging other adventurers for a fight at the arena just right outside the town. He is well-known around the town, people call him "Rovik the Rugged." He is quite obsessed with money though... always wanting people to pay up if they lost a fight against him. He likes to gamble and play cards at the local tavern. He's always trying to che...

Intro to Solo TTRPGs (3/5): Creating Your Character

Image
So, you built out your world/campaign and now it's time to create your character! I will be using D&D 5e as an example, but if you are using a different system they will share the same basic principles of character creation! Here are the 3 main steps: 1. Choose Race, Class and Background - When choosing a race, this will play a big role in your innate abilities, talents all stemming from your past and culture/family. For example, if you are playing as a halfling (or a hobbit) you would make a great rogue being light on your feet! Race will also help increase certain ability scores! - Class is your character's profession or vocation . Classes will have special features and proficiencies as well! You can play as a dragonborn fighter and you will be proficient in certain armor or weapons. Your class will also help in giving you a proficiency bonus (+2 for Level 1 characters). This number can be added to your attack rolls or certain ability checks too! - Now, think about you...

Intro to Solo TTRPGs (2/5): Creating Your Campaign

Image
Now here comes my favorite part… creating your very own campaign! This process can be as complex or as simple as YOU want it to be.  Here are my main 3 steps: 1. Create your WORLD (but start small).  You do NOT have to create the entire world (or universe) of the campaign.  - Start small; start with a small region and add 3 main locations within in that region. Add a town, a village, and maybe a location of ancient ruins (or a forest, dungeon, etc.).  - Then within the region, create 2 factions that are maybe rivals. They can be secret societies, cults, etc. Within one of the factions, you can create a villain! Think about his motives, flaws, weaknesses. Since you are adventuring in this alone, do not make the villain too hard. - If you want to use the Monster stats from D&D, it is recommended to divide the stats by 3 , since they are originally designed to be fought by a group of 3-4 characters. I personally have found that Monsters with CR's between 0-1/4 are ...

Intro to Solo TTRPGs (1/5): Prepare Your Tools

Image
Yes, it’s possible to play Dungeons & Dragons (or any other TTRPGs) solo! I will cover 5 aspects to this, the first part being, “Prepare Your Tools (1/5).” Here are the tools you need to prepare you first solo campaign: 1. Paper (blank or graph/hex paper) and pencils/pens to draw maps and take notes. I prefer playing my sessions offline, but do what works best for you! I like keeping a notebook and a binder to organize my character sheets and any homemade tables. 2. Choose an RPG system. For example, I love using the 5th edition of Dungeons & Dragons (D&D 5e)! There are a ton out there; popular ones include Pathfinder, Ironsworn, Scarlet Heroes, etc.  - Keep in mind, you don't have to play by all the rules. Feel free to simplify it as much as you need to! 3. Grab your dice! Grab whatever you need based off of the system you chose. For example, D&D 5e uses the d20 system. 4. Pick an oracle system and random tables.  The oracle system and random tables will be y...
